First turbine installed at Horns Rev 3

DENMARK: The first turbine has been installed at Vattenfall's 406.7MW Horns Rev 3 site in the North Sea.

Turbine installation at Horns Rev 3 is expected to last until November, Vattenfall stated

Fred Olsen Windcarrier used its jack-up vessel Brave Tern to install the first of 49 of MHI Vestas’ V164—8MW turbines, which are uprated to 8.3MW.

All turbines are due to be installed by November, Vattenfall stated, and the wind farm, located between 25 and 40 kilometres from the shore, is due to enter full operation at the beginning of 2019.

Each of the turbines will stand on 40-50 metre monopiles, the first of which were installed in October 2017. The foundations a diameter of 6.5 metres and are driven 30 metres into the seabed.

Horns Rev 3 is one of four Danish offshore wind farms in Vattenfall's offshore wind pipeline.

It is also involved in the 600MW Danish Kriegers Flak, due online in 2022, and the Vesterhav Nord and Syd, which are both due to be commissioned in 2020 and have capacities of 170MW and 180MW respectively.

Earlier this month, the Swedish developer announced that underlying profit in its wind business had more than doubled from SEK 600 million (€57 million) to SEK 1.6 billion (€153 million).

Denmark currently has 1.28GW of installed offshore capacity, according to Windpower Intelligence.
