Enercon outsources blade supply for Turkish projects

GERMANY: Enercon has signed a long-term supply agreement with US blade manufacturer TPI for production in Turkey.

The deal breaks new ground for the German turbine maker, which has hitherto produced blades in exclusive factories in Germany, Portugal and Brazil.

"The decisive reason behind the agreement was local content requirements for projects in Turkey," said Enercon. But it added that the deal brings logistic and cost advantages that "are significant against the background of increasing competitive and cost pressure".

The blades for Enercon’s new EP3 platform will be produced on two manufacturing lines at one of TPI’s two facilities in Izmir. Production will start in Q4 2018.

Enercon needed a swift supply source since the first EP3 turbines will be installed in Turkey late this year. It described the deal with TPI as the "optimal" alternative to building its own production facility.
