Facebook buys Norwegian wind power

NORWAY: Social media giant Facebook will buy the power from three wind projects in southwest Norway, with a combined capacity of 294MW.

Facebook will use the power from the Norwegian projects to power its data centres

The Bjerkreim cluster, currently under development by German asset manager Luxcara, will comprise 70 turbines, each of 4.2MW provided by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, when completed by the end of 2019.

Facebook will spend approximately €400 million on the power purchase agreement (PPA), Luxcara said.

"Facebook’s engagement gives proof to Luxcara’s commitment to making renewable energy the most attractive option in every regard for our partners", said Luxcara managing partner Alexandra von Bernstorff.

Swedish utility Vattenfall has entered a supply and service agreement with Facebook to offer "wind integration and balancing services" for the three projects.

Facebook has signed a number of wind PPAs both in Europe and the US.

"We are excited to partner with Luxcara on our largest European renewable energy solution to date," said Vince Van Son, Facebook’s commercial director for energy and infrastructure.
