Nordex starts tower production in Brazil

BRAZIL: Nordex has opened a plant in the northern state of Piaui to build concrete towers for the 65 turbines it is supplying for the 195MW Lagoa do Barro complex.

The new plant enables Nordex to "optimise the construction costs of the wind farm and complete construction work with minimum impact", the manufacturer claimed.

It transported large parts of the new plant from a former facility in the south of Brazil in about 300 trips, Nordex added.

The towers produced at the plant will fulfil an order for Lagoa do Barro won by Acciona for 65 AW125 3MW turbines in March 2015 prior to its acquisition by Nordex.

Nordex announced that with the opening of the tower plant, it will install the 65 turbines "in the near future".

David Lobo, Nordex’s head of sales in Brazil, said tower production alone would provide work for about 300 people.

He added: "We wanted to ensure that the local population directly benefits from the project."

The opening of the plant marks "one of the first major investments" in the state’s wind industry, Nordex claimed.

Piaui has 1.65GW of installed wind capacity and a further 2.6GW in various stages of development, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.
