The company added 8.7GW of new capacity across 36 markets in 2016 to emerge as a clear leader, with GE in second place.
Goldwind, which topped the rankings last year, fell to third place. "A lack of geographic diversity continues to expose Chinese turbine OEMs to fluctuations in the China market," said Make.
Gamesa and Siemens, now beginning to merge their operations, were placed fourth and fifth, with Enercon and the Nordex Group sixth and seventh.
Four markets had what Make described as an "over-sized impact" on the rankings: China, the US, Germany and India. The OEMs that were able to capitalise on the growth in these countries showed the highest year-on-year improvement.
Make's analysis largely back-ups that of FTI Consulting, which also placed Vestas ahead of GE, Goldwind and Gamesa, though awarding fifth in the rankings to Enercon rather than Siemens.
