The project is the first to commercially use MHI Vestas' V164 8MW turbine. The first of 32 turbines was installed in early September.

"This milestone is significant for the offshore wind industry at a broader scale. Using these bigger turbines is a major step in reducing the cost of energy from offshore wind and we are proud to once again introduce a step-change in technology," said project programme director Claus Bojle Moller.

The remaining turbines are currently being installed, with completion expected in the first three months of 2017.

Burbo Bank is majority owned by developer Dong Energy, with pension firm PKA (25%) and investment firm Kirkbi AS (25%) holding minority shares.

Dong Energy's project is located 7km off the UK's west coast. It is an extension of the 90MW 25-turbine Burbo Bank project, which was completed in 2007.
