Gamesa will deliver the 18 5MW turbines to the Nangang project in Tianjin, north-east China in 2017, the Spanish turbine maker said.

Nangang is being developed by the renewables division of state-owned hydropower engineering and construction company Sinohydro. The project is expected to come online in 2018.

As well as the first contract for the G132-5MW turbine, it is also the first time any of Gamesa's 5MW platform has been ordered for an Asian project.

The turbine achieved type certification from DNV GL in July 2016 after a year of testing in northern Spain.

Gamesa said the turbine would generate 3% more power than its slightly smaller predecessor, the G128-5MW.

The Spanish firm has installed 4GW of wind capacity in China – a market that contributed 13% of the company's total sales in 2015.
