The 649-square-kilometre lease area is the second zone Dong has acquired from RES Americas.

In April 2015, the developer bought the rights to the 1GW Massachusetts offshore zone.

RES won the lease in an auction held in November 2015, bidding $880,715 for the parcel. It was one of two areas in the auction, with the second lease being won by developer US Wind – a subsidiary of Italy's Renexia.

Dong said RES would continue to support the development of the New Jersey zone.

"The site conditions are quite similar to those we currently work with in north-western Europe, which means that the project could be developed using well-known technology," said Dong Energy vice president for wind, Samuel Leupold.
