Gamesa will construct a new tower factory through its joint venture Windar Renovables. The Spain-based tower manufacturing firm was created in partnership with Spanish tower specialist Grupo Daniel Alonso.
The factory will be built in the northeast state of Tamaulipas, "a high-potential wind region", according to Gamesa. Construction is due to begin in December and be completed by the end of 2016.
Gamesa said the site would produce towers for 500MW of turbines a year, serving the US, Mexico, and Central American markets.
Under the MoU, CFE and Gamesa will co-develop wind projects in Mexico. CFE will also have the option to "participate" in projects in which Gamesa has a stake in other Latin American markets.
"Execution of this agreement will lead to the creation of hundreds of jobs in the tower manufacturing area, and by nurturing a local supply chain capable of manufacturing major parts not only for the Mexican market but also for the US," said Gamesa's managing director for Mexico and Latin America, Hipolito Suarez.
Gamesa claims to have installed over 1.7GW in Mexico, and developed 700MW.
