CANADA: Senvion has closed its PowerBlades Canadian blade manufacturing subsidiary in Welland, Ontario, due to a lack of orders.

The factory had completed all blade production for Senvion's orders in Ontario and the German manufacturer decided to shut it down due to "unacceptably high financial risks".

Senvion blamed a lack in near-term demand for the closure. Senvion CEO Andreas Nauen said the company "tried everything" to keep the factory open including attempts to find projects in other parts of Canada and the US.

PowerBlades employed 136 members of staff at the site in south-east Canada, on the border with the US. Senvion will compensate employees and help find them new jobs.

Nauen said the rest of the company was doing well and no futher closures are expected. "It is a special case as it is a special factory," Nauen said.

Senvion said it remains fully committed to the Ontarian wind industry.
