The certification ensures the component complies with the certification body's guidelines for designs, standards and safety in offshore turbines.
The medium-voltage wind-turbine converter changes the frequency of the power to one that can be handled by the turbine's cables and grid connections.
DNV GL said the certification covers the converter up to 12MW turbine capacities, effectively future-proofing the component.
ABB head of product management Stephan Ebner said: "Thanks to this certification, the development of new wind turbines will be faster and easier for our customers."
DNV GL presented the certification to Swiss firm ABB at the Husum Wind event in Germany taking place this week.
