EWEA Offshore: Offshore turbines can regulate power

DENMARK: Offshore wind turbines are powerful machines able to regulate reactive power, removing the need for expensive onshore compensation equipment to perform that function, according to transformer manufacturer CG.

CG engineering manager Etienne Lemaire told Windpower Monthly TV: "The regulation of the reactive power can be performed by the wind turbines, which are installed anyway.

"The actual technology of the offshore turbines is a really powerful machine that can very dynamically regulate reactive power in fractions of seconds.

"So, we made use of them instead of installing expensive onshore components to do the job.

"Basically with technology that was already present, we managed to regulate the reactive power as per the grid code requirements."

Lemaire was speaking to Windpower Monthly TV at the EWEA Offshore 2015 conference in Copenhagen.
