EWEA Offshore: Challenges of 10MW blades

DENMARK: Researcher at the Netherlands Energy Research Institute Ozlem Ceyhan Yilmaz spoke to Windpower TV's technical expert Eize de Vries about the main challenges of manufacturing blades of up to 100 metres for future 10MW turbines.

Speaking at EWEA Offshore 2015, Yilmaz said: "If you have larger blades the weight increases so the gravitational loads make the design very challenging. You can decrease the weight by making the blades more slender, but then they become more flexible.

"It is desirable to have longer blades but they come with their own issues and problems. At the moment there are a lot of investigations going on to find out a solution to making blades lighter but still reliable and efficient so that they contribute to lowering the cost of wind energy."
