EDF teams up with Sowitec for Brazil venture

BRAZIL: EDF Energies Nouvelles (EDF EN) has joined forces with German developer Sowitec as part of a plan to install 800MW in Brazil.

EDF has launched EDF EN do Brazil, which will take in an 800MW project pipeline from Sowitec.

Sowitec will own 20% of the new venture, which will be based in Rio de Janeiro.

Speaking about the move, EDF EN chief executive Antoine Cahuzac said: "By expanding into Brazil, EDF Energies Nouvelles takes its initial step into the South American continent.

"Brazil has a tremendous wind energy potential and a regulatory framework that is favourable to a massive expansion of renewables in the energy mix."

Beyond its French home market, EDF EN has a wind presence in the US, UK, South Africa, Morocco, Canada and Greece.
