The offshore turbine has been handed a (B) certification, which means its design, testing and manufacturing meet with DNV GL's requirements. It also allows the turbine to progress towards commercial availlability.
MHI Vestas said the (B) type certification acknowledges some outstanding issues that should be addressed before a type (A) certification is awarded.
Chief technology officer, Torben Hvid Larsen said the certification shows the turbine is "proceeding according to our plan".
The V164 is contracted to be used at the recently approved Burbo Bank extension project, off the west coast of the UK.
