It has been an interesting time for former automotive executive Ignacio Martin since he joined Gamesa in 2012.

Faced with the collapse of the Spanish support for wind and difficult circumstances in other markets, notably the US, plus profit warnings, he has managed to turn the company around. It is focusing on Latin America and moving into the low-wind sector with its 2.5MW turbine.

Martin has not held back in making a direct assault on the Spanish government over its failure to support the industry, and its large manufacturing base there could still prove difficult for the company as markets move to local sourcing. Perhaps his shrewdest move has been to tie up a joint venture with Areva to help produce its 8MW offshore turbine.
