While some may say Galan has failed to support wind, especially in Spain where all developments are on hold, his influence on the sector is hard to dispute. Galan's aim when joining Iberdrola in 2001 was to make it the biggest global renewable energy producer.
It still has operating wind assets of around 16GW in Spain, the US, UK and Latin America. Offshore plans are mainly in the UK, some involving its subsidiary Scottish Power.
This year Galan was awarded an Honoray Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by the UK government for development of its energy industry, which began when he bought Scottish Power in 2007.
