DolWin3 construction begins

GERMANY: Construction of the 900MW DolWin3 platform has begun at the Nordic Yards' facility in northern Germany.

Alstom contracted Nordic Yards to manufacture the platform after being awarded the transmission deal by Tennet in 2013.

DolWin3 is expected to serve the Borkum Riffgrund 1 and 2 projects being developed by Dong Energy. They have a combined capacity of 894MW.

Nordic Yards will manufacture both the topside and the jacket support structure. Installation in the North Sea is expected in 2017.

The substation could receive up to 900MW of wind power and convert it from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) before transmitting it to a German onshore converter station, where it will be turned back into AC and fed into the grid.

Nordic Yards' general manager Fred Wegener said DolWin3 will be the company's most complex platform project to date as it is responsible for transportation and installation for the first time.

It has made three other substations, including the 864MW SylWin1 for Siemens.
