Tacke was elected to the role by EWEA's board of directors. He will replace EWEA president Andrew Garrad, who has been in the role since March 2013. Tacke has been head of Siemens' wind power division for just over a year.

In a statement, Tacke said: "One of the first major challenges will be securing an ambitious 30% renewables target in the 2030 climate and energy framework to be agreed by heads of state and government.

"This will give the wind energy industry a springboard for the post-2020 environment."

Binding country-specific renewables targets were left out of EU proposals in January. Former EU president Jose Manuel Barroso proposed a target for 27% renewables by 2030 for the whole of the EU. Countries will only set targets "if they wish", he said.

A decision on the EU policy framework is expected this month.
