The partnership will support the development of the 210MW Deepwater One project and improve the SBU's research in offshore wind in the north-eastern US.

As part of th collaboration, Deepwater Wind will finance and equip SBU's current offshore programmes, which include a Lidar measuring device located at the developer's 30MW Block Island offshore project.

The data will be used to help map the US's offshore wind resources on its north-east coast.

Brian Colle, marine and atmospheric sciences professor and principal investigator at SBU, said: "Combining our respective resources and knowledge should bring some very helpful and informed findings."

Deepwater One is located 48 kilometers off the coast of Montatuk, New York. Deepwater has plans to expand the project up to 1.2GW with 200 turbines.
