The G128-5MW offshore turbine is installed at Arinaga Quay off Gran Canary Island. In August, it produced 3,135MWh more than any other Spanish turbine previously.

Gamesa's unit reached the target thanks to average wind speeds of 14 metres per second – typical for the time of year, the firm said.

The Spanish manufacturer claimed the turbine reached an 85.4% load factor, averaging 4.27MW capacity.

It is the company's first offshore prototype and was commissioned in July last year.

The turbine, which has also been marketed for onshore use, features a "multismart" nacelle, with a top head mass of 270 tonnes (including transformer, drivetrain and converters).

This imposes less load on the rest of the structure, which will enable the use of a monopile foundation in deeper water than normal.

In March 2014, the turbine received type certification from DNV-GL.
