Governor Deval Patrick was invited to the UK by the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult as Massachusetts aims to be among the first states to develop offshore wind through the Cape Wind project.

ORE Catapult CEO Andrew Jamieson and representatives from RenewableUK, National Grid MA, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, and Massachusetts Clean Energy Center met to discuss the emerging offshore wind industry in Massachusetts and how best practices can be adopted from the UK.

The discussion touched on the role of innovation, policy incentives, barriers to entering the market and technical challenges in establishing the industry, as well as project financing, and cost reduction mechanisms.

The 468MW Cape Wind offshore project is inching towards construction, with a staging port selected earlier in September. However, it is facing a new hurdle in the courts after a local group campaigning against the development filed a brief to the Court of Appeals.
