DNV GL reveals HVDC recommended practice

NORWAY: DNV GL has developed a methodology under which offshore high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) technologies can be qualified.

The certification company worked with the Swedish Transmission Research Institute (STRI) and 11 industry players to set out standards for those serving the offshore wind industry, along with oil and gas platforms.

DNV GL said that, to date, experience related to offshore HVDC transmission technologies are very limited and there is a lack of relevant standards, guidelines and recommendations for stakeholders to rely on.

The immature nature of offshore HVDC technologies causes uncertainties and increased risk exposure and makes the projects complicated and costly, the firm said.

As such, DNV GL and STRI have developed a recommended practice on technology qualification for offshore HVDC technologies through a joint industry project with industry players.

Those involved are ABB, Alstom Grid, Dong Energy, Elia, Europacable, Scottish Power, Statkraft, Statnett, Statoil, Svenska Kraftnät and Vattenfall.

The new recommended practice is based on DNV GL's methodology for technology qualification, which has been used for managing technology risks in the oil and gas industry for more than a decade.
