Dong previously said the V164 turbine was its "preferred" choice for the project and both companies have now signed an agreement for the order, dependent on a final investment decision from the Danish developer.
In its first commercial order for the turbine to be used on an offshore project, MHI Vestas will supply 32 units to the site, located 7 kilometres off England's north-west coast.
It is the first time in eight years that Dong and Vestas have signed an agreement for a commercial turbine.
According to Windpower Intelligence, the last time Dong opted for Vestas' turbines for an offshore project was the 90MW Barrow project in the UK, which went online in 2006.
In December 2012, Dong and Vestas entered into an agreement to cooperate on a number of test activities for the prototype of the V164 at the Danish test centre in Østerild to accelerate the development of the turbine.
The Burbo Bank Extension was one of five offshore projects to secure a contract for difference from the UK government, under its new subsidy scheme.
