Acciona and Moventas agreed in 2012 to jointly develop a new gearbox for the Spanish manufacturer's 3MW turbines, reducing its size and increasing torque. Moventas also supplied the gearbox currently used in Acciona's 3MW turbines.
The companies believe that the Exceed gearbox provides 20% more torque density, with a 10% reduction in size.
The Finnish drivetrain manufacturer is now set to supply the new gearbox for a prototype early in 2015, with a view to going into serial production later that year.
Deliveries of the existing gearbox will also run alongside the serial deliveries of the Exceed technology. Over time, Exceed will replace the current gearbox.
The gearbox will be manufactured at Moventas' Finnish factory.
