The US Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $5.5 million contract to Icenogle Construction Management. The company has in tern contracted Juhl Energy and Aegis Renewable Energy to carry out construction work.
Construction is set to begin at the Tooele Army Depot base near Salt Lake City in Utah in the fourth quarter of 2014 or early 2015. A GE 1.5MW turbine was installed at the base in 2011, while a solar array started operating at the site in 2012.
A turbine supplier is yet to be chosen for the project.
The Tooele Army Depot supports military readiness through receipt, storage, issue, demilitarisation and renovation of ammunition, and the design, manufacture, and maintenance of ammunition for the army, air force and navy facilities in the western United States.
Last December, President Barack Obama ordered federal bodies, including the army, to almost triple its use of renewable energy by 2020, saying that the authorities must lead by example.
The new target calls for all executive departments, agencies and the military to source 20% of its energy from renewable projects by that date and sets out goals to be met in the interim.
