The 74MW Noblesfontein and 27MW Klipheuwel wind farms were constructed in a consortium with South African firm Group Five in the Western Cape and Northern Cape respectively.
The Noblesfontein wind farm is made up of 41 Vestas V100-1.8MW turbines. Iberdrola said that the contract, awarded by Spanish firm Gestamp, was worth EUR 112 million to the company.
The great distance of the project from industrial and urban areas meant that the company had to produce some of the materials, such as concrete and gravel, at the site itself.
The Klipheuwel wind farm comprises nine Sinovel SL3000 3MW turbines and is located near to the town of Caledon in the Western Cape. Iberdrola was handed the EUR 40 million contract by South African firm Biotherm Energy.
While South Africa had only 10MW turning at the end of 2013, it is expected to add 750MW by the end of 2014. The first round of tenders saw 651MW of projects, including these two, awarded, while the second round covered 563MW, and the third 787MW.
A fourth round, for which bidding closes on Monday, could see up to 1.34GW awarded.
