The newly installed high-voltage direct-current platform lies 35 kilometres north of the island of Helgoland, near the HelWin1 platform that was erected in 2013.
While Siemens is leading the project, the platform was constructed and put in place by offshore contractor Heerema. The marine and onshore cabling is being supplied and laid by cable specialist Prysmian.
Although the platform has a capacity of 690MW, only E.on's 288MW Amrumbank West, due online in 2015, is lined up to use it. The alternating current from the wind farm's array cables will be fed into the offshore substation and converted to the more efficient HVDC for transport to land.
Siemens said that the transmission project is on track to begin operating next year.
The German conglomerate is working on five North Sea offshore wind grid connections for Tennet. The first four are to begin commercial operations before the end of 2015 and in total provide transmission capacity of more than 2.9GW.
