Gallery: In the sky, high-altitude wind projects

WORLDWIDE: Following Goldwind's announcement last month of its decision to install two high-altitude wind projects in Ecuador, Windpower Monthly takes a look at some of the world's current highest projects.

Goldwind's 50MW Ducal-Membrillo and 54MW Huayrapamba developments will be installed approximately 2,900 metres above sea level by the end of 2015.

These projects fall some way short of the world's highest wind farm, however. Longyuan Power's 7.5MW Naqu project in Tibet has been installed at 4,700 metres above sea level.

The Naqu development has a planned capacity of 49.5MW using Guodian United Power's 1.5MW turbines.

Most of the high-altitude wind farms are located in China, including the Baishanmu, Ma'anshan and Xuebangshan projects.

Grupo Salinas's 50.4MW Los Altos project in Mexico stands at 2,600 metres above sea level. It uses the Vestas V100 1.8MW turbine.
