The decision to change the plan was made after it was found the DC system was more expensive than originally thought following the call to tender.
Energinet said it would continue to work with 50Hertz Transmission to develop the electrical connection between Germany and Denmark, which can be linked to the AC grid.
The grid connection at Kriegers Flak is contracted to be installed and operational by July 2018. Energinet.dk needs to submit an application to the Danish government to get funding approval before the grid connection can be built.
In March, the Danish climate and energy minister, Rasmus Helveg Petersen, warned the government may cancel future offshore projects if the price of the electricity produced was not reduced significantly.
According to local press reports, Petersen said that the DKK 1.05 (EUR 0.141) per kilowatt hour currently paid for the Anholt offshore wind farm is too high.
