The deal includes the first purchase of Suzlon's low-wind S111 2.1MW turbine which was launched in 2012.

The Indian manufacturer's US subsidiary, Suzlon Wind Energy Corporation, will install 29 S97 2.1MW turbines and 17 of the S111 2.1MW machines on projects in California and Illinois.

The turbines are due to be delivered in the summer of 2015. Suzlon will also provide operations and maintenance services for a period of two years.

The Indian firm has struggled in the US over recent years, closing its manufacturing base in Pipestone, Minnesota, laying off 110 employees following a 70% drop-off in US orders in the first half of the year.

On launching the S111, the company said that it was specifically targeting the US market, with the aim of providing the turbine for sites that its higher wind turbines would be unsuitable for. However, the turbine will be manufactured in India.
