Gicon floating foundation granted US patent

UNITED STATES: Gicon has received a US patent for its SOF floating offshore foundation, with the construction of a full-scale prototype expected later this year.

The German engineering group said its foundation is expected to be able to be deployed at depths from 20 metres to 500 metres.

"The USA will be one of the leading markets for offshore wind development in the future. Therefore, it is an important step for Gicon to achieve patent protection for our SOF in the US market," said CEO Joseph Grossmann.

The fully-assembled structure, including mounted turbine, will be able to be towed to the deployment location, "leading to a more cost-effective and less weather-dependent installation", the company said.

In 2012 wave and tow tests of a 1:25 scale model were conducted at the Hamburg Ship Model Basin, while in June 2013 wind and wave tank tests were carried out at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands to confirm the final design prior to construction of a full-scale prototype for testing in the German Baltic Sea.
