This is the first contract for Damen’s offshore carrier 7500. It will be built at the company’s Galati shipyard in Romania and completed by the end of 2014.

In August, Van Oord bought a 10% stake in the 600MW Gemini offshore wind farm, 60 kilometres to the north of Schiermonnikoog, one of the Dutch Wadden Islands. The cable-laying vessel will be deployed at that and other sites.

The Dutch company’s 120 metre vessel has a 5,000 tonne cable carousel, a class two dynamic positioning system and a heavy crane to enable it to lay heavy and long export cables.

Last month, Damen Shipyards' Twin Axe vessel was bought by Scandinavian vessel owner and operator Northern Offshore Services.
