PHILIPPINES: Gamesa is set to make its first move into the Philippines with a 54MW deal with Japanese developer Kanematsu.

The Spanish turbine manufacturer will supply 27 of its 2MW turbines for installation on a site on Guimaras Island in the central Philippines.

The project is set to be completed by the end of 2014.

Kanematsu was handed the contract for the construction of the wind farm and for the laying of underwater cables to other islands by Philippines-based Energy Development Corp.

Research from Windpower Intelligence shows that the country has 2.9GW of projects in the pipeline.

Despite this, there is only one operating wind farm on the archipelago, the 33MW Bangui Bay plant. But since the government approved a feed-in tariff in mid-2012, there has been a rush to develop projects across the country.

Siemens have made two sales in the Philippines this year totalling 162MW, while Vestas secured one order for 87MW.
