Earlier this month the council’s planning committee had voted by five votes to four not to object to RWE’s proposed wind development in the Bristol Channel, between Devon and south Wales. A letter with the recommendation had been sent to the UK’s Planning Inspectorate.
Unhappy at the result of the vote, councillor Chris Leather, a member of the district council's planning committee, wanted the 240-wind turbine project to be discussed at a full council meeting.
Last night the councillors discussed the wider issues surrounding the offshore development, including its effects on local wildlife, especially porpoises, and voted 15 to seven against the site. The council is taking legal advice about the recommendation it will submit to the Planning Inspectorate.
The plan was supported by the top-tier local authority, Devon County Council.
A final decision will be made by energy secretary Ed Davey next year.
