The two companies have worked together in the past with Windreich buying Areva’s 5MW turbines for projects that include Global Tech 1 and the Deutsche Bucht offshore wind farm.
This agreement focuses on Areva supplying up to 130 of its M5000-135 turbine, a development of the widely used M5000-116 unit, which features an enlarged rotor diameter and a new nacelle design aimed at improving serviceability.
A prototype was installed at an onshore site in Germany in February. Series production is due to start next year.
The turbines are intended for the 415MW Baltic Eagle and 315MW Ostseeschatz offshore wind farms, which are close to getting approval by Germany’s offshore authority. A third project, not yet specified, is under consideration.
