The mast will record weather data to support the construction and operation phases of the 389MW wind project. Once the 3.6MW Siemens turbines are up and running, the mast will be used for power performance testing.

It will be installed 14 kilometres offshore in the Irish Sea, and will be supported by a monopile foundation that will be driven 22 metres into the seabed. The anticipated completion date is mid-2014.

"The met mast will be a key performance management tool during the lifetime of the project, and will support the optimised performance of the wind farm," said Charlie Jordan, ScottishPower Renewables project director.

The West of Duddon Sands development has been well under way for almost a year now, and at the end of July, all 108 monopiles and transition pieces for the offshore wind farm were finished at facilities in Denmark.

Out-loading of the last 13 foundations is in progress and will be finished during August.
