Gamesa commissions 5MW onshore offshore turbine

SPAIN: Gamesa's G128-5.0MW offshore turbine prototype, installed at Arinaga in the Canary Islands earlier this year, was commissioned today to become Spain's first grid-connected offshore turbine.

  • The turbine's tower, nacelle and blades were installed at Arinaga Quay, Gran Canaria.

Based on the company's 4.5MW onshore model and in development since 2010, the G128-5.0 has a total height of 154 metres and a rotor diameter of 128 metres. Its 15-tonne, 62.5-metre blades are the longest yet to have been produced or transported in Spain.

The unit was granted design certification by DNV in late 2012, with full certification expected to be achieved later this year.

Gamesa began installation of the tower, nacelle and blades in mid-April, completing the major construction by the end of May. Since then the company has been working on the electrical installation and connection to the network.

Although designed primarily for offshore use, the G128-5.0 has already been ordered by an unnamed client in unspecified numbers for onshore application.
