Gamesa declined to identify either its client or the size of the order until an official announcement is made to the stock market regulator. It did confirm, however, that the deal is for onshore use, not offshore.
A provider to Gamesa confided he believed the deal was for a total of 13 turbines that were likely to go to "a coastal destination".
Other sources also state Gamesa is producing 39, 62.5-metre blades at its Aoiz facility in Navarre, northern Spain; the blade size used for the 5MW machine.
Gamesa has already installed one 5MW machines, with a 125-metre rotor span in the Canary Islands, at the Arinaga port of Gran Canaria, which is pending commissioning. The company calls the project "Spain's first offshore prototype".
Earlier this year, Gamesa said that the 5MW turbine would be available for onshore use, even though it had been developed for offshore.
The 5MW turbine was officially launched in June this year at the Manchester offshore wind congress in the UK.
