Seven Korean firms competing in offshore turbine design

UK & Korea proceed with tech co-operation project

Seven of Korea’s most respected names in heavy industry have submitted plans to the national government for offshore turbine designs. Only a small number are likely to be supported by the Korean government to proceed toward commercialisation.

The following companies have confirmed they are working on at least one offshore turbine design:

Daewood (DSME) – 7MW

Doosan – 3MW

Samsung – 7MW

Unison – 5MW

Hyundai – 5.5MW

Hyosung – 5MW

DMS – 3MW and 5MW

Korea’s offshore wind strategy will seek to combine domestic generation with a sizeable export business, explained Professor Young-Ho Lee, of Korea Maritime University, speaking at RenewableUK’s recent global offshore conference. Two significant offshore wind demonstration projects in Korean waters are being planned.

The UK Embassy in Seoul recently awarded Korea Maritime University and IT Power a modest contract to facilitate co-operation between the two countries on offshore wind, wave and tidal technologies.
