A pair of construction milestones have been reached this week at London Array 1. Once completed, the 630MW development by E.ON, DONG Energy and Masdar will become the UK's largest offshore wind farm.
Foundations installation was completed today, when the 175th and final transition piece was installed. A2Sea's Sea Jack has been utilised for the foundations work at London Array 1, which is 20km offshore in the outer Thames estuary.
Installation of Siemens 3.6MW turbines continues, with the project due for commissioning in 2013.
Earlier this week, the fourth and final export cable was successfully installed, although it is yet to be terminated. Contractor VSMC undertook the work using the Stemat Spirit, which has now returned to port in the Netherlands.
Richard Rigg, project director, said: "The installation of the final foundation at London Array is a significant achievement for everyone involved in the project. With all foundations and export cables now installed, nearly all of the array cables and over two thirds of the turbines installed, construction at London Array is on track to be completed by the end of the year."
A second phase at London Array will see a further 370MW of capacity, taking the project as a whole to 1GW.
