News that electricity has begun to be generated by the UK’s largest offshore wind farm was issued today, representing the latest in a series of positive announcements about the 630MW London Array project.
What is known as "first power" was achieved late last week, Windpower Offshore understands. Testing has since confirmed this was the case.
The announcement of first power comes on the heels of two other construction milestones – completed installation of both foundations and export cables. With 151 of 175 Siemens 3.6MW turbines installed, construction of the wind farm is scheduled for completion this year, with full commissioning in 2013.
The announcement of first power also comes just days after the owners of London Array – Dong Energy (50%), E.ON (30%) and Masdar (20%) – applied for a restriction on expansion of the project to be lifted. A 240MW second phase is proposed by the developers.
