Fred Olsen Windcarrier's new 132m jack-up vessel, Brave Tern, has arrived at Great Yarmouth, having completed its voyage from Dubai.
Capable of operating in water depths of 7.5-40 metres, the Maltese-flagged vessel's first assignment will be the installation of foundations for two meteorological masts, at Dogger Bank in the North Sea. The Harland & Wolff-fabricated foundations will be collected from Belfast.
The met masts will inform the development of the Dogger Bank Round 3 zone. Lying 125km off the Yorkshire coast, the 8,660 sq km area is the largest of the UK's Round 3 zones. With water depths of 18 to 63 metres, it is the planned location for up to 13GW of new offshore wind capacity by 2023.
Forewind, a consortium comprising RWE, SSE, Statoil and Statkraft, aims to develop the zone in four phases. The initial phase – Creyke Beck – will comprise up to two offshore wind farms, each of up 1.2GW capacity, with construction planned to take place between 2016 and 2021.
