The non-profit organisation, established in January 2011 to create a Fairtrade-style standard for businesses using wind power, has already issued labels for companies. Last year, it expanded its remit to take into account other renewable energies.

The new product label applies to all products and services that used a minimum share of 75% of renewable energy of their production's total electricity footprint, with wind power representing the biggest share.

A cradle-to-gate approach was adopted for the product standard, says WindMade, covering power consumption from the extraction of raw materials to the product leaving the factory gate.

"The WindMade product label provides consumers with the transparency they demand and with a credible and intuitive tool to make informed purchasing decisions," said Henrik Cuffer, WindMade CEO.

"It gives companies an instrument to tap into this large pool of environmentally conscious consumers," he said.

WindMade has also started a campaign called Show You Care, aimed to demonstrate to leading brands that consumers favour products manufacturerd with renewable energy.
