Google acquires high altitude wind turbine designer

UNITED STATES: Google has acquired high altitude wind manufacturer Makani Wind Power, the developer of high altitude wind technology.

Makani Power has developed the Airborne Wind Turbine (AWTs) high-altitude power-generating device based on a tethered rigid wing with multiple turbines attached to it.

The AWT will fly between 250 and 600 metres, where the wind is stronger and more consistent compared with lower altitudes.

According to a report, Google CEO Larry Page approved the deal, which is for an undisclosed sum.

Google has long been a backer of Makani. It invested in $10 million and $5 million in 2006 and 2008 respectively. The company has also received a $3 million award through the US Department of Energy's Advanced Research Project Agency-Energy programme.
