NextEra plans is to buy 59 of the machines for a 100MW project in Michigan. The 1.7-100 is based on the 1.6MW 1.6-100 model, introduced in 2010.

Speaking about the deal, Armando Pimentel, president and CEO of NextEra Energy Resources said: "Wind turbine innovation is key to the continued growth of the wind industry, and we look forward to installing this new 1.7-megawatt technology machine."

The 1.7-100 is GE's second turbine to receive the "brilliant" branding in its portfolio.

It incorporates electrical system upgrades and industrial internet capabilities such as data-handling and networking.

Last week, GE received its first deal for the first orders for its other "brilliant" turbine, the 2.5-120 model designed for low to medium wind speeds.

Invenergy ordered three units as part of an 86-turbine deal with GE for its Mills County wind farm in Texas.
