Enercon has a number of projects in the Canary Islands, some as old as 15 years and using sub-1MW turbines such as the E40-850kW.
The Canary Islands have previously been an important market for the German manufacturer. Up until 2002, most of its 45MW Spanish capacity was located there. The majority of the projects have used small numbers of turbines.
There is a plan to install more than 1GW on the islands by 2015. Currentl capacity stands at only 140MW.
Enercon also supplied its turbines to the wind-hydro hybrid on the Spanish Canary island of El Hierro.
The €60 million project forms part of a wider and longer-term goal to make the tourist island self reliant for 100% of its primary energy needs using only renewables.
