Pro-wind US politicians begin PTC push

UNITED STATES: Several state governors join senator Chuck Grassley this morning in a bipartisan press conference this morning to push for a production tax credit (PTC) extension beyond 31 December.

Grassley, an Iowa Republican, authored the original PTC legislation in 1992.

Meanwhile, powerful environmental group the Sierra Club is targeting lawmakers returning to work with a month-long campaign in a key underground station near Congress.

The advertisements depict wind blue-collar workers and have one of two taglines aimed at a polarised legislature: Wind Power is Hard at Work; It’s Time for Congress to Do the Same; or Wind Power Makes Clean Energy, Good Jobs, and a Better Future. Don’t Blow It.

"Every day that Congress delays action means more layoffs and job losses," said Michael Brune, executive director of Sierra Club, America’s largest environmental group.

Congress is expected to act on the PTC during the ‘lame duck’ session, starting today and ending when lawmakers recess for Christmas and New Year.
