The project will be developed by subsidiary, Fujian Zhongmin Offshore Wind Power, which was registered as a company on 28 September. The developer said it will accelerate feasibility research and evaluation of project economics so as to quickly win official approval for construction.
Fujian province boasts some of China's richest offshore wind power resources and has already attracted leading developers, such as Datang, Huadian and Longyuan, as well as turbine makers.
In August, Longyuan Power won approval from NEB to proceed with preliminary work on a 50MW demonstration project to the northeast of Nanri Island, also within Putian city district. The sea area has been earmarked for 400MW of offshore wind capacity.
In March, turbine manufacturer, XEMC, installed a prototype of its 5MW permanent magnetic, direct drive offshore turbine on a coastal cape in Fuqing, Fujian province.
Waters between the south side of the Minjiang River estuary and Xiamen Bay boast particularly strong wind power resources, according to Jiang Cangsheng, senior engineer at Fujian provincial electric power reconnaissance and design institute. The area features high wind speeds and stable wind directions thanks to the funnelling effect of the Taiwan Strait. It is also close to energy consumers.
