Wind wins in upcoming Brazilian tender

BRAZIL: Wind is a big winner in Brazil's next tender with a total 13.18GW or 88% of the projects registered.

The figure was revealed 22 February by national regulator Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (ANEEL) on announcing the date of the auction.

The new contracted power is scheduled to come online in 2016. Apart from wind, ANEEL restricted offers to natural gas, biomass and small hydro, which have registered offers for 10.34GW, 1.04GW and 1.28GW respectively.
The 13.1GW of wind capacity comprises 524 projects, located mainly in the states of Rio Grande do Sul (135 projects), Bahia (128), Ceará (112) and Rio Grande do Norte (100), according to the state power research agency, Empresa de Pesqisa Energética (EPE).
The auction's top price is set at BRL 112/MWh ($65.23/MWh). In Brazil's last auction, December 2011,  976MW were contracted at BRL 97/MWh-109.40/MW.
Brazil finished 2011 with 1.5GW of wind online and with projects lined up with Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) totalling 7.1GW. The government forecast total generation capacity to grow from 119GW currently to 167GW by 2019.
